Josef Lorenzl - A rare and important Art Deco bronze figurine,
Vienna Austria circa 1925, the young woman with her faithful
Borzoi hound, silvered, lacquered and enamelled, mounted on a pale
onyx base.
Provence: Sotheby's Belgravia 15th February 1980.
This beautiful Lorenzl bronze was once part of the well known
specialist in the applied arts of the late 19th and early 20th
centuries Victor Arwas's collection at Editions Graphique Gallery in London and
was photographed for his 1992 publication "Art Deco Sculptures".
It has the impressed signatures Lorenzl and Colka (who was
evidently an Austrian sculptor of the stylised animals although I
can only find one other example of a bronze signed Colka, it being
of a lion).
There are some blemishes to the surface but nothing that detracts
from the beauty of the sculpture and there is a chip to the front of
the onyx, clearly seen in the photograph in the book, but this has
been cleaned and is now not so noticeable.
The purchaser of this sculpture will also receive a copy of the
aforementioned (and now long-out-of-print) book "Art Deco
Sculptures" by the late Victor Arwas.
