Demetre Chiparus - An Art Deco gilt bronze sculpture of the
Madonna and Child circa 1925, mounted on a stepped black marble
base.
Chiparus is now acknowledged as one of the major sculptors of bronze
and ivory statues in the Art Deco style.
This is an extremely rare and beautiful figure, a model we have
not seen before and one that is not included in the book Chiparus;
Master of Art Deco by Alberto Shayo.
The stylised drapes of the clothing as they fall to her feet and the
way they surround her face are so typical of the Art Deco period.
The work of a master sculptor, it can be viewed from any angle, each
revealing its beauty and serenely commanding presence, the back view
reminiscent of the forms of Constantin Brancusi, the front and side
views having the streamlined elegance of the Art Deco movement. The
finish is original with a warm richness to it and in very good
condition, just showing slight signs of wear in places, that if
anything, add to the overall beauty.
