Emmanuel Villanis - An Art Nouveau French spelter bust
titled "Carmela" circa 1900, the young woman with a proud
gaze, the spelter with a bronzed and gilded finish. Slight flaking
and wear to the finish.
The bronze version (this bust can be found titled Carmen or
Carmela) is in the book "Emmanuel Villanis" by Josje Hortulanus-de
Mik.
Emmanuel Villanis
Born in France of Italian parentage. He was educated in Italy, but
worked and exhibited in France in the Salon de Paris and at the
Paris Exposition Universelle. In 1889 he received an honourable
mention. The characteristic and unmistakable "look" of the eyes of
his subjects is due to his technique of deep cutting and his
sculptures can be found in plaster, spelter, marble and bronze.
